Friends of Castleton Station

175 Years Old on 15th September 2014

Castleton Station will celebrate its 175th anniversary on the 15th of September 2014 at 13:00 on the Manchester bound platform.  The Mayor will be in attendance along with local dignitaries and local school children who have assisted Cllr Billy Sheerin and the Friends in keeping the floral displays in great shape.  All welcome.

1.  During the shortlived "Network North West" period about 1979/80, several of the Oldham line trains operated through to or from Southport or Blackpool.   These were four coach sets hauled by a class 31 diesel loco.

 

2.  Jubilee 45662 "Vernon" on empty coaching stock enroute to Shaw to form a Bank Holiday excursion 1963.

 

3.  A Class 101 diesel multiple unit on an Oldham Loop train leaving Castleton for Victoria in Regional Railways livery, early 1990s.

 

4.  A couple of class 142s ‘Pacers’ diesel multiple units in Merseyrail livery with a stopping train for Manchester Victoria.

 

5.  A Cravens class 105 diesel multiple unit enters Castleton station in the overall blue with yellow ends livery of the 1970s.

 

6.  A Freightliner class 66 on a welded rail train leaves the loop and enters Castleton station in the early 2000s.

8.  A Royal Scot 46102 "Black Watch" enters Castleton station with a stopping train from Todmorden to Victoria early 1960.

 

9.  A Sunday afternoon Wigan to Rochdale train with a 2-6-4 Tank locomotive  arrives at Castleton station 1959.

 

10.  Ivatt class 2 Mogul 46506 in the platform at Castleton with a late afternoon Wigan to Rochdale train 1966.

 

11.  A very dirty British Railways standard class 2 number 78063 with a Rochdale to Wigan train in 1962

 

12.  A view looking east as WD class 2-8-0 number 90470 approaches with a mixed freight train through the snow  on a sunny Saturday 2nd March 1962.  As with photo 11 the old Castleton Station signalbox can be seen.
