April '22 Letter

Hi All

I looked back to my newsletter for April last year, in writing this one and discovered I was talking about the time when we hoped restrictions would be lifted and we would be back to normal.  Who could have imagined that 12 months later I would be talking about Europe being on the brink of war.

But at least I will be able this Easter to worship in church and share the celebration with people in person (well at least at the time of writing I can).  One of the more telling stories for me of Easter, is about the two companions walking on the road to Emmaus.  The risen Jesus joins them on their journey.  They talk about all the things which had happened at the crucifixion; Jesus pretends not to know what has been going on.  Jesus then goes to share supper with them and we then read in Luke’s gospel chapter 24 verse 30 and 31,  ‘When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him’.   Merle Haggard a country and western singer recorded a song in which the lyrics say “And he walks with me and he talks with me And he tells me I am his own”

On Facebook sometimes people post a photo of an empty bench and ask if you could spend one hour on this bench with someone from your past who would it be?  What the two on the road to Emmaus discovered is that though Jesus has been crucified death could not hold him.  That same risen Lord is there in the midst of the life we share.  As we walk wherever we are going, it is good to remember those on the road to Emmaus, and know that the same risen Lord walks with us and longs that we should talk with him and know his living presence.

Every blessing
