March, '22 Letter

Hi All

As this month begins, March the 1st is Shrove Tuesday.  The day traditionally when people have pancakes.  For many though the novelty is what will draw them to it; the historical and spiritual side may have less of a resonance. Sadly for many with the cost of living crisis, the hope of even having any food on the table will be the greater challenge.  Pancake Tuesday marks the beginning of Lent a time for abstinence and self-examination.

The other day I came across a newspaper clipping, taken when we lived in Oldham.  It was of Diane, our daughters Vicki, Katie, Tracy and I.  We had taken up the Boaz challenge.  The idea was to live off a Red Cross food parcel and to reflect on what it meant to be a refugee or asylum seeker. We even featured in a national newspaper (autographs later please).  The Boaz Trust is a charity based in Manchester seeking to support those seeking asylum.  The popular myth that people who land on our shores in boats are given places to live, food and money is far from the reality.

So I wondered if you would like to join us this year in the challenge.  The challenge is to live for one week off a Red Cross food parcel.  It will help us I hope, reflect on the plight of those who leave so much behind  as refugees.  They very often have to ‘sofa-surf’, having no permanent residence.  No access to transport and the daily comforts we enjoy.

But also sensing the struggle people face between eating or heating their homes. It will help us reflect on the needs of others and increase our awareness and how much we really have.

If you would like a pack about the challenge let me know.  The one I have is from 2015 but the basic principle is the same. Or contact the Boaz Trust on the website above if you want to know more.
