COVID-19 Guidance Notes

NOTES ON GUIDANCE FOR THE SAFE CELEBRATION OF MASSES at ST. GABRIEL'S and ST. JOHN'S

Due to the safe social distancing requirements that we have had to put in place e.g. reducing the number of benches that can be used, there are only 42 places available at St. Gabriel's and 40 at St. John's. A couple, or family unit occupying one place will affect the number of other people who can be accommodated on one bench. Masks must be worn at all times when inside the church, except for when receiving Communion: Exemptions will be made for people with certain medical conditions, and for children under eleven years old.

The church will be open thirty minutes before the start time for each Mass. When you arrive, a steward will ask you for your name and a contact telephone number, as we need to keep a record of attendees for any future ‘track and trace’ requirements. This may take a few moments, and it may be necessary for you to wait in a queue before you can enter the church. For this reason, we ask that you allow plenty of time from your arrival to allow this process to take place, in order to prevent a ‘crush’ as we get closer to the starting time.

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT WE AVOID PEOPLE GATHERING IN THE ENTRANCE TO THE CHURCH, AS THIS WILL COMPROMISE THE SAFE SOCIAL DISTANCING MEASURES THAT WE HAVE IN PLACE.

The queue line will extend on to the street, where safe social distancing marks will show you where to stand.

In order to ensure that everyone is safely accomodated before Mass starts, THERE WILL BE NO ADMISSION TO THE CHURCH FIVE MINUTES BEFORE THE START TIME FOR EACH MASS.

When you enter the church, a steward will show you to the next available place - it will not be possible for you to choose where you sit. In order to maintain safe social distancing, we would ask that attendees do not kneel as they take their place in the pew; instead, you will be asked to take a seat, and to remain sitting throughout the duration of the Mass.

Further guidance on the procedures of the Mass, such as Communion, will be given at the appropriate times during the service.

Please note: The Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales have suspended the obligation to attend Sunday Mass until the 1st Sunday in Advent 2021. It is, therefore, not a sin if you feel that you would prefer to attend a weekday Mass instead as a means of observing the Sabbath
