Shawforth Drum Majorettes

Intro

Shawforth Drum Majorettes were initially formed during 1980 by Doug & Olwyn Bardswell. They decided that they would like to offer local children a chance to put their spare time to good use. Leaflets were handed out around a number of local houses around the area of Shawforth (Rossendale) inviting children to attend Shawforth Methodist Chapel and begin to form a band. Seven children attended and thereby the group was formed.

Regular practice nights and more children meant the band grew in numbers and experience, unfortunately due to ill health Doug & Olwyn could no longer continue with their role as trainers and handed over the organization to Jeff & Kay Ogden in 1986. At that time there were regular attendance numbers of twenty five children and willing volunteer adults to assist the them.

At the first public outing the group played a total of two tunes through the whole carnival with a total of one baton movement. This is all a far cry from the children who take part now, who at the last count had a total of sixty songs to choose from!!!!

Jeff & Kay had a visit from representatives of the Friends of Bocholt group in Rossendale who requested that the majorettes consider providing accommodation for an equivalent German group, consisting of fifty four people. This group intended to visit Rossendale for Rossendale carnival in 1988. They agreed and many long-lasting friendships were formed.

Shawforth Drum Majorettes have changed a lot over the years and in 2003 Mr Kevin Keatley took over the group. Due to other commitments he has handed over the group to Kirsty Ogden (Kays daughter) and Kirsty's partner Andrew Parkinson. They both hope the next year will be as successful as every year before, and would like to welcome any new members to the group.
