The family of a dedicated volunteer who worked tirelessly for local charities has paid tribute to a “remarkable man.”
Peter Smith, a trustee at Jolly Josh and a volunteer at the Rochdale Soup Kitchen among many other community involvements, sadly passed away on Tuesday 10 September.
Peter, known to many as Pete, was a devoted husband to Ann, a loving father to Amy, and a cherished stepfather to Natalie and Gina, as well as a very proud step-granddad to Charlie, Ronnie and Pippa.
His warmth and kindness touched the lives of everyone he encountered, and he will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and the wider community.
Peter spent his life in Rochdale, having lived with his parents on Osborne Street and Ashfield Road areas before moving to Manley Road in Sudden.
He attended Brimrod, Matthew Moss, Broadfield and Oulder Hill schools before pursuing further education at John Dalton College in Manchester.
Over the years, Pete worked at several local and regional firms, including ICI in Blackley, Syngenta in Huddersfield, and Sygmatex Material Innovation in Rochdale, where he earned the respect of his colleagues for his dedication and hard work.
Pete’s interests were diverse and abundant. He was a passionate sportsman, both as a player and a fan. He enjoyed football, and especially taking Charlie to his football sessions, cricket, darts, boules, rugby, and golf.
Throughout his life, Pete played for local football teams, including Deepdale Emeralds, Castleton Parish, Robinsons, and on Sundays, The Cemetery Hotel, The Merry Monk, and The Turf Tavern.
A dedicated supporter of Rochdale AFC, Liverpool FC, and the England national team, Pete’s love for the game was matched only by his enthusiasm for music.
His eclectic taste spanned artists like David Bowie, Roxy Music, The Damned, Echo and the Bunnymen, and he was known to attend countless concerts, festivals and gigs.
Many people will recognise Pete from the hours he spent walking his dog Chip around Ogden reservoir.
Affectionately nicknamed "Swiggy" by friends, Pete was well-known for his love of a good drink and his impeccable sense of style.
As his friend John Schofield fondly recalled: “Pete was a leading player for the Cemetery team that rose from the bottom division to the Premier division. He was not only a great captain but also the best drinker.”
“We had many fantastic nights out together, some lasting into the following day.” Pete's social life was filled with laughter, camaraderie, and the joy of spending time with friends.
Beyond his personal passions, Pete was a man of generosity and service. He dedicated much of his time to volunteering for causes close to his heart.
He served as a trustee and treasurer for the charity Jolly Josh, which supports families of children with complex medical needs.
In a statement posted on social media, the charity wrote: “It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of Peter Smith, a remarkable man who touched so many lives with his kindness, generosity, and unwavering spirit. His warmth and compassion will never be forgotten.”
Pete was also a committed volunteer with the Soup Kitchen Rochdale and the Lighthouse Community Foodshare in Whitworth.
Marilyn Jones from the Soup Kitchen shared her gratitude for Pete’s dedication, especially during the Covid pandemic, when he frequently collected and delivered food donations to those in need.
“Peter was so dedicated to his volunteering that he continued right up until his recent diagnosis. We are deeply saddened by his passing and are so thankful for everything he did for us.” Pete’s efforts made a significant impact on the lives of vulnerable people in the Rochdale community.
Pete’s funeral will be held at Rochdale Crematorium on Bury Road at 1.20pm on Friday, 11 October. All who knew him are welcome to attend, and in accordance with Pete’s wishes, guests are encouraged to wear black formal attire.
Following the service, a celebration of Pete’s life will take place at Rochdale Rugby Union Club on Moorgate Avenue, where attendees are invited to wear bright colours or football shirts, reflecting Pete’s joyful spirit and love for sport.
Peter Smith’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His kindness, generosity, and sense of humour will be remembered by all, and his legacy of love, friendship, and service will live on.
Anybody who is unable to attend but who wishes to watch the service can do so online by logging on to a livestream. This is available by contacting Bridgefold Funeral Director's on 01706 639941.
The family kindly request no flowers, however donations would be welcomed and appreciated to buy a defibrillator. Further details for donations will be shared at the funeral.
