Obituary: Alan Scholes

Date published: 19 November 2024

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Alan Scholes, former Saddleworth Rangers and Rochdale Hornets prop forward. Alan, who held the honour of being the oldest Hornet alive until his passing on 25 October 2024, died at Fairfield Hospital following a short illness.

Born on 7 June 1929 in Oldham, Alan was the third of six children and grew up on Stoneleigh Street, Derker. A bright and talented young man, he excelled in maths, history, and sport during his school years.

After completing National Service in the Army, Alan began his rugby career with Saddleworth Rangers while working at Oldham General Hospital. It was there he met Joan, the love of his life.

The couple married and settled on Royle Road, Sudden, where Alan balanced his work as company secretary at R&T Howarth, Builders & Civil Engineers, with his career as a professional rugby player for Rochdale Hornets.

Alan's rugby career was sadly cut short in 1960 when he retired after losing the sight in his right eye following a particularly gruelling game.

Undeterred, he channelled his energy into business, co-founding a successful chain of launderettes in the 1970s with his friend and colleague Hamish Howarth. Alan and his family later moved to Norden, where he resided for the rest of his life.

In retirement from 1995, Alan relished spending time with his family, travelling, and cultivating his garden.

Alan is survived by his two sons, David and Robert, who will carry forward his legacy of kindness, determination, and love of family.

The funeral service to celebrate Alan's life will be held at Rochdale Crematorium on 22 November at 2.40pm. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend.

Alan will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
