Visit to Goshen School 2019

Diane and Andrew Hardwick and Mary and Joan Thomason would like to thank everyone at Moorhouse and the wider Rochdale and Littleborough Circuit for the support provided and the prayers offered for School visit to Goshen School in Soroti , Uganda.

We took 140 toothbrushes, 400 small tubes of toothpaste, Bible Story Books, School dresses (some provided by Milnrow Village Treasures), medicines, vitamins, school shorts, football tops, pencils, pens, shoes, socks, underwear, unburstable footballs, balloons, bubbles, an assortment of bras, bubble wands and some New Testaments. All of these items were gratefully received.

Earlier this year the rains failed and there were food shortages, but whilst we were there it was still the rainy season and the land was looking verdant. Unfortunately, the rain meant that there were more mosquitoes, which meant that there was a high incidence of Malaria and Typhoid among the school children and this kept Joan busy during her medical check ups.

Our visit was in school term so we saw the primary school in action but we weren't able to spend as much time with the secondary pupils as their schools are spread out across the District. We did however see quite a lot of them on Sponsor Day, which was the Saturday of our visit. It was good to meet some of the older ones who had come to the end of their secondary education and were pursing careers, vocational training or University education

After our visit last year, the charity, Amana Uk, were able to help to raise funds to improve the drinking water supply and the new installation is impressive and well used.

Mary and Diane spent the mornings teaching the nursery classes and colouring animal masks. Afternoons were spent with Jairus, the administrator, looking at accounts or helping to fit out children with shoes, socks and uniform.

Andrew took lots of photos and was able to take a group photo of all the eight children sponsored by individuals at Moorhouse.

If you would like to hear more about our trip, we will be doing a talk at Moorhouse on Saturday 9th November (see details below. All funds raised will be used to support the work of the charity. (a particular need at present is new mosquito nets, as these can easily become worn or damaged over time)
