The Friends of Carnegie Castleton

NOTES FROM JANUARY MEETING

The meeting held on 11th January was well attended and several matters were agreed upon. • the interior of the Carnegie building is a cause for concern and attempts, by council officials, to contact the owner have failed. It was agreed that the Friends write to the owner and ask for the building to be returned to the people of Castleton, as per the Andrew Carnegie gift of 1904. • the proposed Constitution for the Friends was circulated in draft form and agreed, a final copy will be signed at the next meeting on 6th February and made public. • it was decided that the group should be a Workers Co-operative which would allow for members to buy shares and bring the building into ‘common ownership. • a bank account with the Co-op bank was set up and with 4 members being signatories. An anonymous donation of £39.66 will be the first ‘credit’ into the account. • membership subscriptions for supporters of the group was agreed at £2 per annum (50p for children). • it was agreed that leaflets, and some posters, would be printed and distributed in Castleton, an offer to cover the cost of printing was gratefully accepted. Printing would be done by a Castleton company. The leaflet will contain membership details with cheques payable to ‘The Friends of Carnegie Castleton. * the next meeting will be on Monday 6th February at 7pm in the Castleton Community Centre.
