Details:

The Esplanade in front of the Rochdale Town Hall will be transformed into a Festival Square for families between 11am-5pm.

Most activities run all day, although there are specific times for certain shows as indicated.

Activities and shows include:

  • The Bewonderment Machine - Performance times: 11.30am, 2pm and 3.45pm (45 minutes) The Bewonderment Machine. A cycle-powered carousel, a fascinating public structure and a magical journey for small children.
  • The Virtual Reality Playground - Open: 11am-5pm - A child wearing a virtual reality headset. Put on a virtual reality headset, jump on a playground swing and be transported inside an experimental virtual reality ride mechanism, chosen from the growing collection created by the world's only Thrill Engineer, Professor Brendan Walker and his team of Thrill Laboratory technicians. An out of this world experience for participants and spectators.
  • BEES!! The Colony - Open: 11am-5pm - Visitors examining a beehive. A fascinating multi-sensory experience. You'll wander amongst the honey-perfumed bee colony, occasionally cloaked in smoke, finding a variety of ways of viewing and interacting with the contents of 6 impossible bee hives. Weird, but quite wonderful.
  • Dip - Performance times: 12noon and 1.45pm (25 minutes) - Jonah, Oliver and Max mid-jump. A show for all ages to enjoy. Jonah, Oliver and Max meet and decide to embark upon a quest to know and learn about each other.
  • The Playground of Illusions - Open: 11am-5pm - A young child operating a machine. A place to explore, play and discover incredible wonders that have to be seen (or heard) to be believed.
  • Hold On - Performance times: 11.25am and 2.50pm (25 minutes) - The character of the show holding on to a rope. A show where gravity, counterweight and centrifugal force are tested to new limits.
  • Bumble Bees - Walkabout times: 1.30pm and 3pm (30 minutes) - 2 beekeepers with smoke dispensers. With typical panache and imagination, this is a multi-sensory experience where you can get up close and personal with a deluxe and sumptuous beehive.
  • Dinotopia - Walkabout times: 12.30pm, 2pm and 4.15pm (30 minutes) - The dinosaur character. An amazing opportunity to get up close and personal with a 'real, live' dinosaur for the first time since the Cretaceous era, and to find out a few things about how they lived and why they disappeared. Make friends with her and pose for a selfie, as we look forward to the visit of Dippy, the National History Museum's Diplodocus. Dippy comes to Rochdale in February 2020.
  • Sports - Open: 11am-5pm - There'll be fun activities from Link4Life, including an inflatable assault course, balance bikes and tennis.
  • Creative activities - Open: 11am-5pm - Touchstones Rochdale. Touchstones Rochdale will be hosting lots of feel good creative activities all day, including dhol drumming workshops, yoga, mindfulness, meditation classes, henna and a performance by the Women in Touch Community Dance Group.
  • Skylight Circus Arts - Open: 11am-5pm - a trapeze artist performing.
