Family-run bar inspired by The Great Gatsby opens in Rochdale town centre

Date published: 07 October 2022

A family-run Art-Deco-themed bar and lounge has opened in Rochdale town centre.

The Malibu Bar and Lounge opened at 17 The Butts on 30 September, and plays all types of music to cater for any crowd with a smart-casual dress code.

The venue is run by Dean Spencer, 35, who says he has always wanted to work for himself and run his own business, and staffed by his mum and sisters.

He said: "Running a bar has always interested me and I thought if I ever opened one I'd go for an Art-Deco theme. I like the way all the art and design looks in The Great Gatsby; it looks really good and relaxing.

"I'm enjoing it all so far. Before this I was doing sales and surveying, but after years of the same thing, I just had to try something different. When we find our feet, we will be looking to open on Thursdays and also have a band on Sundays."

Malibu serves cocktails, a range of beer on tap, bottled beer, wines and Champagne and prosecco and aims for you to “leave your worries at the door and let the music take you on a journey.”

Dean added: "We also have our own doorman every weekend from 7pm to 2am and we don't allow glasses outside after 6pm. We look to make everyone feel comfortable and make sure everyone is enjoying themselves."

The venue will play all the latest dance music on Fridays, followed by a different theme or genre of music every Saturday - this Saturday (8 October) is 'naughty 90s' night - with 80s hits and Motown on a Sunday.

Malibu is open from 6pm-2am Fridays and Saturdays, and from 4pm-1am on Sundays.
