Caketastic Creations wins Celebration Cake Business of the Year at prestigious Baking Industry Awards

Date published: 24 October 2022

Middleton’s Caketastic Creations has been named the Celebration Cake Business of the Year in the national Baking Industry Awards 2022.

Caketastic Creations, by Johanna Moloney, was one of three businesses shortlisted for Celebration Cake Business of the Year, attending a glitzy awards ceremony in London on 20 October.

Up against the Berkshire Bakesmith and Shuga Budz, Wolverhampton, Caketastic Creations took home the award for a spectacular royal-themed cake.

Johanna was shortlisted in the same category last year, which was only the second time she entered a competition after reaching the semi-finals in the same contest the previous year.

Royalist Johanna loved the theme: her inspiration was a trip she made to an exhibition at Buckingham Palace of iconic royal dresses.

Johanna said: “It was great to represent our area in these awards and to bring the award home to Middleton. The cake will be displayed in our shop when it returns from London.”

This year’s theme was ‘Jubilee’ with judges praising Johanna’s attention to detail.

A former chemist, Johanna began baking after she was made redundant. She went back to college at Hopwood Hall and completed a cake decorating course, attending Wednesday morning sessions at a community centre in Heywood where she “really got into it.”

Johanna began making cakes for family and friends before turning her new hobby into a business. She worked from home for nine years, moving into her Oldham Road premises in August 2019.

Caketastic Creations offers celebration cakes, brownies, cupcakes and traybakes as well as cake toppers and a small range of cake decorating items that customers can buy to make cakes at home.

Johanna also runs ‘Queenie the Caravan’, a caravan converted to offer afternoon tea and cake at markets, events and festivals.
