Zero-waste shopping returns to Littleborough with Riggs from the Roots Up

A new zero-waste shop is opening in Littleborough on Tuesday 24 January.
Riggs from the Roots Up at 52 Victoria Street is owned by Lee Rigg, and will be run by his wife Nicolle Rigg and her sister Collette Tierney.
The shop will stock organic tinned items by Suma, plus grains, pulses and cereals in dispensers, as well as nuts and dried fruit.
Organic fruit and veg will be supplied by Organic North, and the Miniml range of refillable eco-cleaning, laundry and personal care items completes the products available. Made in Yorkshire, Miniml uses a closed-loop system, meaning empty packaging is sent back to be refilled.
The zero-waste movement aims to tackle the use of single-use disposable plastics by providing goods with reusable or refillable packing, recyclable metal, glass or paper packaging, or no packaging at all with the customer bringing their own containers.
The rise of zero-waste shops has largely been fuelled by independent businesses going one step further.
Nicolle said: “Our daughter has been doing posters in school about being eco-friendly, and a lot of her friends try to follow by this. This got us thinking about how we could change the waste control within our family home, and led to us discovering Miniml.
“The organic food was because we as a household are committing to changing the way we see food and changing our eating lifestyle. This then got my husband’s wheels clicking about how there isn't a shop like this in Littleborough and how refreshing it would be to have in the village.”
She added: “We are pushing the eco-friendly as much as possible as every little bit helps the environment. We are new to the lifestyle and very excited to dive into all aspects.
“We look forward to greeting customers and hopefully as a community we can learn together.”
Riggs from the Roots Up will be open Tuesday - Friday (9.30am to 4.30pm) and Saturday from 10am to 4pm.
