Highfield Hospital has a new MRI scanner

Date published: 11 September 2014

Highfield Hospital has a new MRI scanner, which weighs six tonnes and needed a crane to lift it into the hospital.

The scanner will improve imaging for muscular and joint problems such as sports injuries and spinal disorders, and will deliver new services including breast and vascular imaging.

The scanner can also provide whole body scanning for cancer patients and abdominal imaging for liver and bowel conditions. These images will help consultants to better identify a whole range of conditions.

Benefits of the GE Optima MR450w 1.5Twith GEM Suite scanner include:

Excellent image quality – high resolution images showing better detail and clarity to improve diagnosis
Large scanner diameter which will help reduce claustrophobia and anxiety for patients
Acoustic Reduction Technology - reduced noise for greater patient comfort
Feet-first imaging to reduce patient anxiety during examination

Vicki Clegg, Imaging Manager at BMI The Highfield Hospital, said: “We are delighted that BMI The Highfield Hospital has invested in new state-of-the-art equipment for Rochdale.

“The MRI scanner will advance the hospital’s imaging and diagnostics services, and allow us to expand into new areas.

“This comes as part of continued investment into the hospital’s services which will give patients access to high quality care, from diagnosis to recovery.”
