Salt Separation Services involved in HMS Ocean refit

Date published: 17 September 2014

The UK Royal Navy’s amphibious assault ship, HMS Ocean, has recently completed sea trials after the completion of a major refit by Babcock at Devonport Royal Dockyard in Plymouth, UK.

Salt Separation Services were contracted to overhaul and upgrade the ships four 75 m³/d Reverse Osmosis (RO) desalination plants used for the production of potable water (both for use on-board and for humanitarian aid when required). A team of six engineers spent six days on HMS Ocean commissioning the plants and providing training to operators and maintainers.

In addition, Salt Separation Services, in conjunction with Optimarin of Norway, supplied an IMO approved Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) for the treatment of ballast water to comply with Resolution MEPC.174(58).

HMS Ocean is the Royal Navy’s helicopter carrier and amphibious assault ship designed to deliver troops to the centre of the action by helicopter or by landing craft.

She can operate six helicopters from her flight deck with space in the hanger to hold, transport and maintain many more aircraft.

HMS Ocean’s complement of 380 personnel includes 9 Assault Squadron Royal Marines, who operate four landing craft designed to carry vehicle and personnel to the front line ashore.

The 21,500 tonne ship was launched in 1995, has a top speed of 16 knots and a range of 8,000 miles.
