Obituary: Dennis Turner

Date published: 27 July 2020

It is with unbelievable sadness that Dennis’s family are announcing his sudden recent passing. Dennis passed away peacefully in Fairfield Hospital in Bury on Tuesday 21 July 2020, aged 87 years following a short illness.

Dennis was a very much loved son of the late Alfred and Catherine, partner and soulmate of Beryl, father of Tracy and John, and grandfather of Kyle. A dear brother of Matty and Terence, and uncle of David, Andrew and Gary; he will be greatly missed by his family and closest friends.

Dennis was a very well-known and popular local character in Rochdale who was much loved by many many people from all walks of life in the local community.

Dennis’s funeral service will take place at Rochdale Crematorium on Monday 3 August at 11.10am and will last approximately one hour.  People may also like to know that at approximately 11.00am, Dennis’s funeral hearse will be passing Spotland Stadium, home to Dennis’s beloved Rochdale Hornets Rugby League Club.

Numbers in the Crematorium Chapel will be strictly limited and are by invitation by the family only. Dennis’s funeral service will be broadcast by loudspeaker from the Chapel, and people wishing to pay their respects are able to stand outside the Chapel in the Crematorium Grounds, observing social distancing at all times.

Anybody who is unable to attend but who wishes to watch the service can do so by logging on to a livestream where it will be live streamed. This webcast will also be available for viewing for another 28 days after the service.

Dennis’s family are very conscious that Dennis had many many friends in Rochdale and beyond, who will be in shock at the sudden nature of Dennis’s passing, and who might want to reach out. Dennis’s family are also conscious of the limitations around personal contact that are presented by the current Coronavirus situation.

With this in mind, any friend of Dennis’s is warmly invited by his family to get involved with the celebration of his life by sharing their memories and stories of Dennis by emailing remembering.dennis33@gmail.com, and the family will endeavour to reply to all emails. These shared memories of Dennis will be of great comfort to Dennis’s family and will, in time, help them come to terms with their terrible loss. Dennis’s family are also thinking that if enough people take part, these shared memories might be able to be used to create a memory book for Dennis, which could be made available at a memorial service that Dennis’s family hope to hold in the future so that we can all celebrate his life in person, when it is safe for us to come together again.

No floral tributes please by request, donations if desired to Francis House Children’s Hospice, in Didsbury, Manchester M20 5NA, a charity of which Dennis was a long standing supporter.  Cheques payable to Francis House Family Trust.
