Newhouse Academy opens its doors for an Open Evening

Date published: 20 September 2023

Newhouse Academy, in Heywood, is offering the families of prospective students an opportunity to come and see the school with an open evening event, being held on Wednesday 27 September 2023 from 6pm.

As part of Hollingworth Learning Trust, they are committed to providing opportunities for all students, coupled with the determination to ensure they all achieve their desired destinations after Year 11 when they leave.

Mr Alex Burnham, Headteacher of Newhouse Academy said, “This is a very exciting time for Newhouse Academy and our community.

“The emphasis for the academy is the ‘Our People’ high expectations agenda. We have concentrated on just doing the right thing for our people, through a carefully constructed personal development curriculum, working on character. This includes the students and the staff. The old school had been underachieving for a number of years, but we are now seeing sustained improvements across the academy.

“We have received recognition for our attendance, which is better than the national picture and have supported other Multi Academy Trusts in relation to this. The number of students with 4+ and 5+ grades in English and maths (2023) is the highest the academy has ever achieved. Our progress and attainment since 2019 shows we are the most improved academy within the authority in many areas.

“There were great results in many other subjects too, with photography, performing arts, Spanish, French and sports science worthy of special mention.

“We are delighted with the progress that the school is making, excited about the potential of our current and future students, and are all working tirelessly to ensure that we keep moving forward, delivering the very best education.”

Teaching staff at Newhouse Academy are encouraged to be imaginative and creative in the classroom, to deliver motivational and inspiring lessons in line with the “Our People” agenda. They believe that all students, regardless of starting points, should be given the opportunity to achieve their goals in education.

This mind-set is placed at the heart of teaching and learning and the sequenced curriculum enables students to develop both personally and academically. This approach encourages all students to see challenges as opportunities to flourish and failure as a part of the learning journey.

The academy nurtures strong links between school and home to support students to gain the most from their education. They have invested more resources into SEND and SEMH than ever before to ensure success is accessible to all.

The academy is one of fifty schools included in the first phase of the Department for Education’s School Rebuilding and Renovation Programme. This means that in 2024, a brand new, net-zero carbon, school building with state-of-the-art facilities will open and operate alongside the current Newhouse building which opened in 2012.

The new build incorporates a four-court sports hall, activity studio, drama studio, main hall, changing rooms, construction, engineering and design technology workshops, a dining hall, fitness studio, music rooms, science labs, graphics and food technology rooms, and related spaces.

The senior project manager for Morgan Sindall, responsible for delivering the new build, will be on hand at the open event to discuss the programme and how this new state-of-the-art facility will benefit students, staff and the community for many years to come.

With these fantastic facilities the academy can ensure it is offering students a broad curriculum of subjects to choose from. A route for both the practical and academic.

The school also offers a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities on a daily basis. Students can get involved in sports teams and clubs, book clubs, performing arts activities, the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and much, much more. The opportunity to participate in trips and visits, including residential and overseas adventures is also available.

Many talented students have achieved recognition, both locally and nationally for their involvement in sport and performing arts; their achievements are regularly celebrated by the academy. The Year 8 boys football team are currently Rochdale Cup champions!
