The cupboard is bare at Heywood Foodbank

Date published: 11 July 2017

This is the time of year when Heywood Foodbank starts to struggle; as summer progresses, the shelves begin to empty.

Yet it is now, when schools break up and free school meals are not available, that the need grows. In addition, since the introduction of the 5p charge for plastic bags, the foodbank regularly runs out of these.

Items of non-perishable food can be taken to:

  • Local churches - St. Joseph’s church is usually open all day every day
  • Morrisons
  • The Foodbank - on Monday or Friday mornings - Bethel Street, behind Jack Fulton's shop, 15 Market Street, Heywood, OL10 1HX

The Heywood Foodbank is an independent Foodbank run under the umbrella of the St Vincent de Paul Society (SVP), an international Catholic organisation which works to alleviate poverty in the local community.

Local businesses, schools and churches and other groups usually keep the foodbank stocked all year round.

Everything that is given is distributed within a short period of time.
