Beech House School

Date published: 20 September 2017

After a short journey over The Pennines a group of Year 8 students started the day at York with a guided tour with a gruesome background around Clifford’s Tower where Dick Turpin was hung drawn and quartered.

It was a very informative tour in which some of the students enacted the results of Typhus, a disease caught and spread by prisoners in the dungeons.

All of the students were terrified of the experiences in the dungeons; some students were ‘burnt as witches’, some were ‘tried for stealing’, some were ‘decapitated’ and some were ‘put in ‘Bais-Tue.’

The smell in the dungeons was so sickening.

The three staff members, Miss McGarvey, Mr Bateman and Dr Hudson were all ‘volunteered’ and took part in many gruesome activities, particularly in the torture chamber.

The hall of mirrors provided many students with the ability to panic at being lost and, at the same time, to see the fear of being lost.

To end a fantastic day the students took part in a ‘Deadly Drama Workshop.’

In this activity the students performed both vocal and physical ‘warm up’ activities and then were allocated a grizzly theme in which they had to design and perform a five minute performance.

Everybody totally enjoyed their visit to York Dungeons and after a tiring journey back along the M62 to Beech House the students went home to dream of their frightening experiences.
