Councillor calls time on Milnrow clock

Date published: 18 January 2018

A councillor has called time on an issue affecting a local landmark.

Councillor Neil Butterworth said he was so fed up waiting for the Milnrow clock to be fixed, he took it upon himself to secure the money to get the popular landmark running again.

The Milnrow and Newhey representative said: “I had always felt uncomfortable with the original agreement when it was sold to developers back in 2002, because it meant we did not have access to the clock for maintenance or repair.

“It was always only going to be a matter of time before it needed attention to keep it going.

"With the best will in the world the clock was never going to be a priority for the developers, but to me and the community I serve it is well-loved.”

Councillor Butterworth secured funding to do the initial safety work for the clock tower and to get the clock itself working again.

He added: “Residents can rest assured I will continue to put pressure on everyone involved in keeping that clock going to ensure it is brought back into use. It is far too important as a popular village landmark for it not to be in use and appreciated.”
