Middleton Rotary help pack 50,000 meals

Date published: 17 April 2018

Middleton Rotary helped to pack meals for 50,000 hungry people at the Rise Against Hunger meal pack event in Bolton on Saturday.

More than 250 volunteers, Rotarians and community groups spent the day packing the meals for the world’s hungry.

Rise Against Hunger’s nutritious dried meals consist of rice, soy, lentils and 23 essential vitamins and minerals.

One and a half litres of boiling water are needed for preparation, and the pack serves six people.

Janice Powell, President of Middleton Rotary said: “Over the weekend Rotarians and friends took part in the Rise against Hunger food packs in Bolton and Wilmslow and packed approximately 55,000 meals for a school feeding programme in Kibera, Kenya.

“These meals will enable children to attend school instead of foraging for food.

"In addition to this, over 1,650 items were collected for the local food banks.

“Eight members of Middleton Rotary helped at the Bolton event and had a real fun day of team working for a wonderful cause whilst packing over 30,000 meals.”

Around the world, nearly 805 million people lack adequate food, by helping to package the meals they have helped to change a children's lives.

Since it started packaging meals for hungry children and others worldwide, the nonprofit Rise Against Hunger (formerly known as Stop Hunger Now) has packaged more than 300 million meals distributed in more than 40 countries. Volunteer efforts by Rotarians have played a huge part in the group’s success.
