Pensioners Association summer lunch

Date published: 27 June 2018

Pensioners from around the borough joined together for their annual summer lunch on Wednesday (27 June) at Rochdale Town Hall.

The Pensioners Association organise a summer lunch and Christmas dinner every year, both of which are attended by the Mayor of Rochdale.

Also in attendance was Deputy Mayor Billy Sheerin, Leader of Rochdale Council Allen Brett and the head of Age Concern for many years, Vera Hurst.

Speaking before the lunch, Mayor Zaman said: “I want to say a big thank you to everyone for inviting me to this event.

“All of us face problems in our lives and I am glad this association comes together to help one another in your time of need.

“Thank you to everyone for coming today and working together. The group has done a lot for Rochdale and for the country and I will always be happy to help you in any issues you face.

“Well done to you all for doing a wonderful job.”

Mayor Zaman also requested that one of the associations members joined his charity committee; Emily Bannister, social secretary of the group, was nominated for this opportunity.

After the lunch, entertainment was provided by singer Paul Dillon followed by a raffle and a game of bingo.

Chairwoman of the Pensioners Association, Wendy Mottley, said: “The group was formed 26 years ago. We organise day trips once or twice a month, as well as holidays and we host parties through the year like this one.

“We aim to help people who are on their own and want to meet new people in a group where they feel safe. The association is a place for people to talk in a friendly environment, where you can also discuss your problems.”

Phil Bethel – ex-councillor and vice chairman of the group who organised the event – said: “I think it is important when you’re older to keep mixing with others and stay social.

“It helps you stay relaxed with a good crowd of people.”

The group meets in Rochdale Town Hall council chambers on the last Wednesday of every month at 2.00pm and currently has over 80 members.
