Summer reading scheme helped chidren enjoy learning in a fun environment

Hundreds of youngsters enjoyed a summer of reading, exercise and healthy eating thanks to a Fit, Feed and Read scheme.

The programme of events supports children to read books and enjoy learning in a fun environment.

Over 300 children attended Balderstone, Darnhill, Junction, Langley and Smallbridge libraries throughout the summer.

There was also an increase in the number of children who completed this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, Mischief Makers.

Youngsters who successfully read six books were awarded medals and certificates during presentations at library branches.

The vision of the Fit, Feed and Read scheme is to provide children with lunch, a free activity and learning opportunities throughout the school holidays.

Councillor Janet Emsley, cabinet member for libraries, said: “I am so pleased to see how many children participated in Fit, Feed and Read this year.

"Well done to everyone involved in completing the challenge and underlining that reading matters.”
