Wardle Boxing Day walk

Date published: 28 December 2015

The route of the annual Wardle Boxing Day walk had to be changed for the first time in 42 years due to Wardle Brook bursting its banks over the first part of the route.

The usual route was joined at Watergrove Reservoir, where scenes of gallons of water gushing down the recently renovated reservoir overflow awaited the walkers.

Norma Brandon, GSL 17th Rochdale 1st Wardle Scout Group, said: "About 100 people braved the heavy downpour, some completing the route up to the top of Brown Wardle, others preferring the walk around the reservoir to arrive back at Wardle Scout HQ for bacon butties and a brew.

"Walkers took the opportunity to view the damage caused by the heavy rains around the countryside. Whilst one of the bridges around Watergrove has been demolished by the fast flowing stream, the bridge on the route provided safe access for the walkers.

"Around £200 was taken in bacon butty sales. This money will be put towards a flag for Wardle Explorer Unit. Explorers and leaders gave their time to come and cook bacon and feed the walkers who truly deserved their lunch.

"Thank you to two of our Cub parents for donating the bacon, the Muffin Man for baking baps on Christmas Eve to feed us."
