St Edwards’s pupils call on Councillor Billy Sheerin to help them clean up Castleton

Date published: 20 January 2016

Pupils from St Edwards Primary School, Castleton, have called upon their local councillor, Billy Sheerin, to help them clean up the local area.

The Year 6 pupils took a walk around the area where they found dropped littler, overloaded bins and graffiti, and took it upon themselves to get in touch with the council and get it cleared up.

The pupils are working towards an Archbishop of York Young Leaders Award, which will be announced sometime this month.

Councillor Sheerin, who visited the school on the 8 January, said: “These children are really working hard and I fully support what they are doing. I am happy that they contacted me so I could be a part of this, it really is a positive move and I am happy to be able to support them.”

Dawn Frost, Higher Level Teaching Assistant, said: “The kids are really keen to make a positive change in the area, and it has been wonderful to see them get stuck into this project.

"The Archbishop of York Young Leaders Award would mean a lot to them, and I think they really do deserve it. It’s not 100% but we think there may be a bishop coming into the school at some point, which would really make their day.

“Councillor Billy Sheerin was really helpful and is assisting us to achieve our goals. We are really happy about that.”
