Bad news for Jazz fans

Date published: 22 March 2005

Jazz on a Sunday, a popular weekly Jazz event at the Kingsway Hotel may have to come to an end, due to the entertainment ban made by Sam Smiths Brewers when the entertainment licensing fees increased last year.

The ban was brought forward in December after the fees had increased dramatically, and Sam Smiths Brewers simply decided to wipe out the music and entertainment access all together. This has affected a number of venues throughout the North West.

Jazz on a Sunday member Tony Sheldon said: “It was December when this initially happened, but we will not be thrown out until April this year, as Sam Smith’s Brewers had to honour the bookings that we already had. I’m very disappointed, and we aren’t the only ones, there are other venues in the North West that will suffer too. But we will hopefully continue, we are on the lookout for a new venue”

Many other venues that played music, used televisions and pool tables, and held live bands have been affected throughout the North West, including the famous White Horse Folk Club in 'Nellies', Beverley.

The Managers of the Kingsway Hotel have said that they will not talk about the matter.

Humphrey Smith, the director of Sam Smiths Brewers, has simply refused to comment.
