Call for Metrolink extension to Middleton

Liz McInnes MP has backed calls for an extension to Metrolink
A proposal to extend the Metrolink, including a possible extension to Middleton, has been backed by Heywood and Middleton MP Liz McInnes.
The Labour MP responded after the new Oldham and West Royton MP Jim McMahon brought proposals to Parliament for two new extended lines to be added in the region. The proposals, if they went ahead, would mean Rochdale commuters could travel to various other locations without having to go via Manchester city centre.
Addressing his fellow MPs in Parliament, Mr McMahon said: “I will use this opportunity to place down a marker for the Ashton loopline from Ashton town centre to Oldham Mumps, and for a Middleton spur from Oldham Westwood through Middleton and on to the Bury line, connecting the north-east conurbation of Greater Manchester”.
Liz McInnes told Rochdale Online News: “I pledged my support for Jim’s proposal in parliament immediately following his maiden speech last month. I absolutely agree with him that the extension of the Metrolink is necessary to aid the growth of all areas of Greater Manchester.
“I am also in favour of a circle line linking Bury with Rochdale and Oldham, and I look forward to making the case for this in any discussions that take place over the coming months.”
