Yet another collision at Townhead Junction

Date published: 09 February 2016

There was yet another collision at Townhead Junction on Friday (5 February).

No one was injured, but the accident has caused anger from many residents.

Clive Jones says: “There have been three attempts to improve Town Head junction over past 10 years costing millions of pounds all of which have failed to solve or improve road safety at this junction.

“Yorkshire Street/Whitworth Road four way junction, traffic light controlled right turn filter? No.

“Resulting in 10 similar accidents and numerous near misses since major junction changes in late 2015.

“St. Marys Gate/Spotland Road, four way junction, traffic light controlled right turn filter? Yes.

“St. Marys Gate/College Road, four way junction, traffic light controlled right turn filter? Yes.

“St. Marys Gate/Dane Street, four way junction, traffic light controlled right turn filter? Yes.

“What is so different about Yorkshire Street/Whitworth Road four way junction or are we about to see the other three four way junctions on this stretch of road given the illogical logic treatment of the Yorkshire Street/Whitworth Road four way junction, which has three right turn traffic light controlled filters applied and one accident prone right turn without a traffic light controlled filter?

“Side effects from this situation are added pressure and not inconsiderable increased costs to local NHS, Police and RMBC resources.

“Motoring insurance costs increased because of increased area claims profile. To say nothing of the stress that all accidents cause to the parties involved in accidents.”
