Sajjad Anwar: Banned driver who killed grandmother fails to get driving ban lifted

Date published: 19 May 2016

Speeding driver Sajjad Anwar who killed a grandmother and injured her sister in a crash has failed to get his driving ban lifted.

Anwar, of Deeplish Street, was convicted in 2011 and was jailed for three years and four months and banned from holding a driving licence for seven years.

Five years later, Anwar, now 25, said that he has a different approach and attitude to driving than at the time he was convicted, aged 19.

Catherine Teeters, 58, died on Saturday 15 May 2010 after her Vauxhall Corsa was hit by the high powered Audi Quattro on Bell Lane in Bury. Her sister Diane Baker was left with serious injuries.

Bolton Crown Court heard how Anwar, who worked for a Rochdale car hire company, took the car for a drive and ended up overtaking a queue of traffic at 70mph before ploughing into Mrs Teeter’s car.

Anwar, who has served his time in prison and taken a victim awareness course, is now due to get married and told the court that he has struggled to find work due to the lack of a driving licence since coming out of prison.
