Benjamin Howarth writes first novel in memory of his grandmother

Date published: 21 July 2016

Benjamin Howarth is raising money to publish his first novel in memory of his beloved grandmother.

The 30-year-old Rochdale man decided to put pen to paper and fulfil his lifelong dream of being a writer after his gran, Cynthia Firth, told him to “stop wasting time” and follow his dreams before she died.

After the passing of Cynthia, her words stayed with her grandson who decided to put all his focus into writing the dystopian apocalyptic novel, and he is appealing to the public to help him self-publish it.

He said: “It’s hard to put into words what this book means to me. It comes down to one person in particular who means the world to me. Unfortunately she is no longer with us, it is my late Nana.

“She knew that I wanted to write this book, and I’ve been thinking about it for years. Just before she passed away, she told me to stop wasting time, stop making excuses and write it, so I did. She told me to follow my dream to here it is.

“I honestly believe that without her as my inspiration this book would never have been completed.”

He added: “With self-publishing you have more control – you have control over the distribution and over how many you print as well as the ability to digitally market yourself.

“I personally find that the more effort you put into something the more you get out. Rather than letting something else do it for you, you tend to get better results.”

Benjamin still has the last few chapters to write and his hoping to get published from his donations. At the time of publication, £633 had been raised of his £5,500 target.
