Warning as 'sneak thieves' use cat flaps

Date published: 28 July 2016

Opportunist 'sneak thieves' have been on the prowl in the Castleton area, using everything from unlocked doors to enter people’s homes to hands through cat flaps to steal belongings.

Police were called to The Green, off Royle Road, on Tuesday to reports that thieves had put their hands through a cat flap to steal a bag of tools that were left close to the door.

On the same evening, opportunists were reported to be trying various front doors until one was unlocked, where they entered and took a handbag from a living room.

The bag was later discarded in a garden with money and valuables gone.

Greater Manchester Police has confirmed they are investigating the issue, and has issued a stark warning to residents to not make life easy for opportunist criminals.

GMP said: “Last night, opportunistic (sneak thieves) were on the prowl in Castleton and sadly for two victims, got lucky.

“Please ensure each door and window is locked before you retire at night. Take keys out of all doors and take upstairs with you.

“Also, do not leave valuables close to doors as thieves can snag property by using the hook and cane method.

“They are easy steps to take – don’t become lapse and fall victim.”

Anyone with any information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
