'War babies' from the 1940s baby boom celebrate turning 70 together

Date published: 02 August 2016

Rochdale 'war babies' who were part of the post-war baby boom have come together for one big birthday party as they turn 70.

The group of women, many of whom were once part of Wardle Young Wives Group, say their births were brought on by the end of the Second World War as soldiers - their fathers - returned home from the battlefields to family life.

Seven decades later, the group of ladies decided to treat themselves to a red rose and champagne dinner on the East Lancs Railway.

Janet Bracegirdle, from Wardle, who helped set up the celebrations, said: “It was a wonderful celebration and we were celebrating the baby boom itself as well as the fact that we are all around the 70 mark. Many of us turn 70 this year which is incredible.

“We often do things together, we socialise and enjoy each other’s company. One or two have moved away over the years but they come back to Rochdale when we’re having a celebration or a gathering.”

The end of World War II brought a baby boom to many countries, especially Western ones.

Janet added: “I have lived in Wardle all my life and I’m really happy that I have these women all the same age to go out with.

“The trip on East Lancs Railway was absolutely wonderful. A great memory.”
