Workmen put temporary tarmac where the setts have been removed on King Street
Work to preserve the historical wooden setts of King Street, Rochdale, has sparked concern that the entire street will be filled in with tarmac.
The historical setts were removed on Wednesday by Council workmen to preserve them, before they are returned to their original location. The area has been filled in with temporary tarmac.
It is understood the tarmac will be down for about a week.
The significance of the setts has been addressed previously by Councillor Richard Farnell, Leader of Rochdale Borough Council.
He said: “The wooden cobbles in King Street are a reminder of Rochdale’s rich historical past and its importance to the growth of our region and the country. It is important that where possible we embrace our history as we create Rochdale’s new, exciting future.”
