The Tuxedo Jazz Band

Date published: 03 October 2016

The Tuxedo Jazz Band, paid their latest visit to Jazz On A Sunday with Richard Knock on trumpet, Gerry Owen on reeds, Derek Galloway on trombone, Malcolm Hogarth on piano, Mal Horne on banjo and guitar, Izzie on bass and leader Brian Woods on drums, all in top form treating an appreciative audience to upwards of twenty numbers - the overwhelming majority of them 'with vocal refrain'.

In an extended opening set Gerry insistied the auidence 'Shake It Or Break It', Mal was castaway 'On Treasure Island' and Derek was 'Black And Blue'. Then with Malcolm’s piano in strong support Mal reminded everyone that 'It’s A Sin To Tell A Lie'.

Their lonely goatherd went Latin (Derek returning with 'Buona Sera'); Gerry recalled Frank Ifield courtesy of 'I’m Confessing That I Love You' - Derek’s response was 'Someday You’ll Be Sorry', there was some respite for their respective vocal chords courtesy of 'Savoy Blues', then came Derek’s party-piece 'Magnolia’s Wedding Day' and to end Gerry leading the ensemble Sidney Bechet-like 'Dans Les Rues D’Antibes'.

Set Two opened with 'Bogalusa Strut' after which as our American cousins say “there was mainly vocals from here on in” - balladeer Galloway lamenting 'Am I Blue', 'Maria Elena' in fluent Spanish (albeit with a crib sheet) from Richard, another respite for some more authentic New Orleans by way of 'That’s A Plenty' then finally Gerry doubling on alto and vocals with 'I Want A Little Girl'.

Set Three took us back to where 'our' music first kicked off - witness 'The Original Dixieland One Step'. Then came Mal with 'Whisky Drinking Woman', more classic New Orleans by way of 'Royal Garden Blues', by “popular” request Gerry and 'Saint James Infirmary Blues', Derek and 'I Double Dare You', Richard in 'My Blue Heaven' and finally Derek - Maria von Trapp no longer but inescapably Miss Monroe - predictably 'Running Wild'.
