Remembrance Sunday in Milnrow

Date published: 21 November 2016

Councillor Butterworth reflects on Remembrance Sunday 2016 in Milnrow...

On Sunday last, at the Cenotaph in Milnrow Memorial Park, my heart was truly full to overflowing.

I was extremely proud to be amongst the nearly two thousand residents of Milnrow, Newhey and Ogden who came together to pay their respects to our gallant servicemen and women.

Those brave people who have paid the ultimate price defending our country over the many conflicts we have been involved with in defence of our democracy and open society.

Ivan Ruiters excellently conducted the very moving service.

You may remember Roy Lothian, who was recently awarded the legion’d’honneur by the French Government. Roy was due to lay a wreath to his fallen comrades but unfortunately he was hospitalised on the day, I wish him well with his recovery and hope he will be fit enough to lay a wreath next year.

The coming together of so many local people in joint acknowledgement of the huge debt we owe to countless men, women and the many animals who have died in defence of our way of life is truly outstanding and reaffirms my belief that together we can build a fairer, more inclusive society.
