Castleton Swimming Club in danger of closing

Date published: 24 November 2016

Castleton Swimming Club is appealing for more volunteers or the non-profit club is in danger of closing at the end of the month.

A meeting will be held at 7.00pm on Tuesday 29 November at Castleton Community Centre to discuss any final decisions.

The club has been running for 106 years and as a voluntary organisation relies heavily on unpaid workers giving up their free time to teach swimming and move equipment. Currently the group has 11 volunteers (with two of those helping when they are not at university), and hopes to gain a volunteer to take over administration and around six to eight more who can train as swimming teachers.

Volunteers would be expected to start around 16 January and be trained by May.

Organiser Christine Taylor said: “We’ve had many who have started out volunteering with us, who have gone on to further employment in teaching swimming at bigger organisations. They can really make a career out of it.”

Anyone wishing to volunteer is welcome to attend the meeting, or contact Christine Taylor on 01706 632 670.
