‘Save The Green Belt’ protest walks

Hundreds are planning to march on Monday 2 January for the ‘Save the Green Belt Walk’ against proposals for building thousands of homes across green belt land in Rochdale and Oldham.

Various action groups from Middleton, Slattocks, Royton, Chadderton, Shaw, Milnrow and Newhey have set up meeting points before they will all march and join forces at the Tandle Hill Country Park memorial around midday.

The walk is to protest against the developments, which proposes more than 15,000 houses to be developed across the Rochdale borough in Bamford and Norden, Roch Valley in Smallbridge, Trows Farm in Castleton, land to the north east of Smithy Bridge and land at Lane End to the east of Heywood.

In addition, 120 houses are being considered for Green Belt land in Milnrow and Newhey, and a further 1,400 houses are proposed across the River Beal in Shaw.

A separate walk to protest plans to build 750 homes in Bamford and Norden will take place on Saturday 7 January.

The meeting points for Monday’s walk are as follows:

Middleton Group
10.30am at Boarshaw Lane Canal Bridge at the Junction of Rochdale Road (A664) and Thornham Lane

Slattocks Group
10.30am at Smalley Hall, Thornham Lane

Milnrow and Newhey Group
11am at Hopwood Arms Pub, near the All in One Garden Centre, Slattocks

Royton Group
11am at Thornham St James School

Chadderton Group
10.45am at Chadderton Hall Park Tennis Courts

Shaw Group
10.30am at High Crompton Park

The consultation period has been extended to Monday 16 January. The second draft of the plan will be published in 2017 and there will be further consultation around this before the plan is submitted to the Secretary of State for independent examination in 2018.
