Littleborough Labour out in force for Day of Action for the NHS

Date published: 24 January 2017

Well over a hundred-people braved the freezing cold in Littleborough on Saturday morning to sign a petition organised by Littleborough Labour as part of Labour's Day of Action for the NHS.

A spokesperson said: "This was a demonstration like scores of others happening up and down the country to urge the Government to reverse the funding cuts the NHS has suffered and to put an end to privatisation.

"As the head of the BMA said, social care services are 'cracking under the weight' of the NHS funding crisis. We have heard the Red Cross describing the chaos in our hospitals as a 'humanitarian crisis'.

"The media reported less than two months ago that care for the elderly was 'close to collapse' as council funding runs out. The social care crisis is pulling NHS trusts further under water, and Littleborough has lost both its local hospitals, Birch Hill and Rochdale Infirmary. This is unacceptable.

"We are not living in the dark ages nor in a developing country. We are entitled to expect a hospital bed, not a long wait on a trolley. Our country has the resources to fund the NHS; what the government lacks is the will. In a bid to promote the private sector and reduce the cost of public services it is willing to inflict suffering on both patients and staff alike. It's time Theresa May showed some respect for both."
