Josh McCormack Fundraiser
Brooke O'Donovan, a student in Year 9 at St. Cuthbert's has held a fundraising walk in memory of 5-year-old Josh McCormack who very sadly passed away last Friday.

Brooke and her friends walked for miles last Saturday in memory of Josh.

As always, we are extremely proud of our students (pictured) who are taking part in this fundraiser. As a school community, we offer our thoughts and prayers to the McCormack family during this very sad time.

PE News

Stand out performances include those from Zinedine Zufiqar for his performance in the sprints, distance and relay races, Holly Parnum-Taylor for her outstanding display of sheer strength in the shot putt, and Isobel Lord for her endurance and determination in the long distance race. Well done to all those who took part.

Year 8 Boys’ Football

Last week the year 8 football team took part in the annual Under 13 6-a-side competition at Matthew Moss High School.

In total, 11 schools within the borough entered and after a couple of disappointing 1-1 draws against Kingsway Park and Oulder Hill in the group matches, the lads found themselves in 7th position. This then meant a quarter final fixture versus the so far unbeaten Wardle Academy.

The lads took the fight to Wardle from the first whistle and took the lead through an excellent goal from Taylor Wilson. Some resolute defending followed and at the final whistle a semi-final fixture versus Kingsway Park awaited.

Confident from the quarter-final, the lads started strongly and were quickly 2 goals up through Taylor Wilson and Carlos Dos Santos. A couple of substitutions followed and the game ended with a solid 2-0 victory. Cardinal Langley were the opposition in the final and had a 100% victory record up until this point.

A very tight first half saw no goals, but a quick start from us in the second saw Mackenzie King score a goal from outside the area. However, unfortunately with 10 seconds remaining Langley equalised with a great finish. Penalties loomed. Still pumped from their equaliser, Cardinal Langley showed their striking prowess and went on to narrowly win the shoot-out.

A great effort from all of the lads and a very commendable 2nd place in the competition.

Year 9 Boys’ Football
The Year 9 boys’ football team have progressed in the Catholic Cup. We beat St. Peter’s from Gorton tonight 4-2.

We conceded two goals from corners early in the game. Joao Soares scored just before half-time to give the team a lift. The second half was dominated by St Cuthbert’s and goals from Joao Soares Harvey Holden and Sean Gallop sealed the win. Shay Stansfield was outstanding in the nets and the whole squad should be proud of beating a very useful side.

Under 12 Girls’ Football

St. Cuthbert’s Under 12's girls’ team finished 4th in the Rochdale Schools Football League. Outstanding displays from Sabrina Ado-Poku and Alex Hughes. Well done to all those who took part.

Today Sacred Heart came along to complete their final session all about promoting their school. This time they created Digital adverts which could be used on the school website or digital signage. The students were eager and full of enthusiasm as they created sound bites. They also chose some uplifting music to accompany their work. During the second part of the session it was time for the students to edit and create their individual adverts. We then watched their amazing creations as a group. Well done Sacred Heart.

Drama: Year 11 pupils are working on their costume designs for controlled assessments. Pupils have been researching a range of historical eras/cultures from the 1950s to Asian traditional dress.

Music: Congratulations to Year 8 students Charlotte Carter and Emily Guinan on passing their recent instrument grade exams. Charlotte Carter passed her Grade 3 Violin, while Emily passed Grade 1 Cornet. The Graded instrument exams are particularly challenging and fantastic achievements for both students, as these are recognised musical qualifications that they can keep for the rest of their lives and even add to their C.Vs. Look out for these two young lady’s names in the future, we have high hopes that they may opt for Music as one of their specialist subjects next year.

Year 7 have begun a new topic investigating the Music of China. They will be building on their recently acquired keyboard skills by learning to play the Glockenspiel in small group projects.

Year 10 have just begun the second area of study on the new GCSE Music syllabus, and will be looking at popular music from the 1950s - 1990s, beginning with a case study on the Beatles album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. During this topic, Y10 students will be performing their own interpretations of the album tracks Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, With a Little Help from my Friends and Within Without You as a class band.

Year 11s are preparing for their Pre Public Exams by racing to meet their upcoming deadlines for Composition coursework, appraisals and final Performances for recording.

The Musical Liturgy Group have welcomed a number of new junior apprentice members this term, many of whom took lead roles in our recent production of We Will Rock You. Year 9 students Ava Towers, Amy Hardman-Elliot, Rheagan Fay, Alex Dixon, Sebastian Kirby and Caragh Ridgeway have joined the group at their new rehearsal slot of Friday afternoons after school, where they will join the seniors in preparing music for our weekly masses in the Chapel and the upcoming Lenten Liturgies at the end of this term.

Finally, our fantastic Vocal Tutor, Miss Matthews, from Rochdale Music Service has established a new male vocal group, which will be rehearsing after school on Wednesdays. Watch this space!

Chaplaincy News

Caritas is the name of the charity of our Diocese of Salford.
Guest speakers Lawrence Bettany and Meriel Woodward visited St Cuthbert's during Mission Week back in October to tell us all about the work Caritas carry out with the most needy and isolated in our region including the homeless, the elderly and refugees.

This is a key part of us living our Catholic, Christian Faith.

As well as it being the name of one of our buildings, you will have heard of Caritas through our annual Lenten fund-raising for St Joseph's Penny which is part of the Caritas charity.

We have a group of pupils in our school who have been trained and commissioned as Caritas Ambassadors.

Their job is to keep us up to date with opportunities to support Caritas projects and in a few weeks they will be launching our 2017 Lenten fund-raising appeal for St Joseph's Penny.
We were delighted that 3 of them were invited to come to the Cathedral Centre to help to train new members from some of our primary schools, including pupils from St Patrick's and St Vincent's.

They helped to run the day by speaking about all their plans for this term and working with groups of younger pupils to help them develop their own plans.

They also led the readings at the start of the training day and during the commissioning service in the cathedral.

In the afternoon, there was an opportunity for them to meet Paul and Patrick who work for Caritas and spoke to the Ambassadors about what they do and how rewarding their work is.

As a result we will be sending cards and letters to some of the lonely elderly people Caritas work with and invite them to our school's summer tea party.

This is all part of St Cuthbert's putting Faith into Action.
