Castleton Swimming Pool ‘unlikely to re-open before March’

Date published: 01 February 2017

Castleton Swimming Pool is ‘unlikely to re-open before March’ after the pool was closed in mid-December.

The pool was forced to close twice last year, in May and December, after Legionella bacteria was found.

The bacteria can cause Legionnaires’ disease, a serious lung infection that can lead to pneumonia or even prove to be fatal.

Gillian Bishop, Chief Executive of Link4Life, said: “We are very aware that this delay, for which we apologise, will be of a disappointment to our users. Our priority remains that the facility is safe and that the best interests of users are protected. We will continue to do our best to make sure that users of Castleton Swimming Pool are able to use the swimming facilities at other Link4Life venues throughout the Borough.”

A spokesperson for Rochdale Council said: “Although there is no re-opening date, we wrote to pool users earlier this month to let them know that the site would be unlikely to re-open before March 2017.

“Link4Life, which runs the site, has found alternative provision for users of the pool. No decisions have been made about the pool’s long-term future, and if there are any to be taken, users would be consulted.”
