A Rochdale Online reader said: "I'm just wondering when we are all being expected to 'make difficult spending decisions' how the local tax payer can afford to pay for this post whilst public services are about, in some cases, to be reduced to their lowest level since 1974?"
Steve Rumbelow, Rochdale Borough Council Chief Executive, said: “The recruitment is to replace our director of resources who recently left the council after 39 years of service in local government. The role is a critical one, particularly during a period of such strain on council resources.
"Since 2009 the council’s senior management team has been cut from 24 posts to eight saving almost £1.5 million a year.
"Our director pay levels must be competitive to attract the right people but they remain among the lowest in Greater Manchester.”
