Middleton Scout and Guide Associations St George’s Day Parade

Middleton Scout and Guide Associations held their annual St George’s Day Parade from Jubillee Park on Sunday.

Groups gathered for a service at St Leonard’s, Middleton Parish Church during the service groups renewed their promises.

After the service the procession assembled in Jubillee Park, then paraded onto Long Street, Durnford Street, Rectory Street, Wood Street onto Manchester New Road and into Middleton Gardens.

A spokesperson for the Middleton Scouts said: “It’s been a great turnout again and glorious weather. Our thanks to the volunteers and stewards who helped to make the parade possible.”

Groups taking part in the parade included:

  • 17th Thornham Beavers
  • 7th St Thomas More Brownies & Guides
  • 8th St Thomas More Beavers, Cubs & Scouts
  • 1st Parish Rainbows, Brownies & Guides 
  • 1st Parish Beavers & Cubs 
  • 1st Boarshaw Beavers, Cubs & Scouts 
  • 1st St Michael’s Rainbows, Brownies
  • 2nd St Michael’s Rainbow & Brownies 
  • 2nd St Michael’s–Tonge & Kirkway Beavers, Cubs & Scouts
  • 2nd Mills Hill Brownies
  • 4th Alkrington URC Brownies 
  • 5th Elmwood Rainbow & Brownies
  • 5th St Peter’s Brownies 
  • 7th St Peter’s Beavers, Cubs & Scouts 

A spokesperson for the 1st Middleton Scouts said: “A busy weekend for our group. Some of the Explorers did their DofE training, the Scouts and a handful of Explorers did an expedition hike and camp, all sections attended the St George's Day service and parade at St Leonard's church and some of our leaders ran a soft archery stall at The Olde Boar's Head, which put on a Saint George's Day event.

“We raised £546 from the Tesco bag pack session a couple of weeks ago and a further £198 at thSt George's Day celebrations at The Olde Boars Head.”

Baden-Powell, who started the Scouting movement, chose Saint George to be the patron Saint of Scouting. He felt that the Saint George legend set a good example of faith, courage and perseverance for future generations.
