Heywood Scout and Guide Associations gathered on Sunday for their annual St George’s Day Parade.

The Parade started from Harwood Park School led by Cadishead Community Public Brass Band, then onto Hornby Street, King Street, Mount Street, Manchester Road, Hartley Street on to St Luke’s Church.

Groups assembled at St Luke’s Church for a service where they renewed their promises.

Councillor Peter Rush said: "It's been an excellent day.

"This is my tenth year attending the St George's Day parade and service as a councillor.

"The weather has been very kind and the children in the parade were well presented and well behaved."

Father Paul Daly, who took the service and is a Scout leader, said: "Today shows how fantastic the Guide and Scout movement are.

"There is a shortage of leaders. I would encourage parents interested in becoming a leader to contact their local group.

"The values of the Scout and Guide movement are enduring values."

Groups taking part in the parade included:

  • 4th Heywood (St Luke's) Brownies
  • 1st Heywood Scouts
  • 9th Heywood (St Luke's) Guides
  • 9th Heywood (St Margaret's) Guides
  • 1st Heywood (Crimble Croft) Brownies
  • 7th Heywood (St George's) Rainbows
  • 14th Heywood (Woodland) Guides
  • 8th Heywood (St James') Brownies
  • Heywood Senior Section

Afterwards the groups paraded past the Cenotaph to salute the Township Chairman Peter Rush, Heywood Councillors and dignitaries.

Baden-Powell, who started the Scouting movement, chose Saint George to be the patron Saint of Scouting. He felt that the Saint George legend set a good example of faith, courage and perseverance for future generations.
