Rochdale high schools shoot it out in football showdown

Ten secondary schools from across the borough made it to the Rochdale Schools Cup Finals, held at Hopwood Hall College’s public Sports Arena.

In the Under 12 final, Siddal Moor Sports College took on Middleton Tech. In a tight contest between two determined teams, it was Siddal Moor who won the final with a 2-1 win.

The Under 13 final saw Wardle Academy go up against Cardinal Langley RC. Cardinal Langley put three past Wardle to make it a 3-2 win for the Middleton-based school.

Siddal Moor won in the Under 14 final. Hollingworth Academy beaten 3-0.

Hollingworth’s Under 15s faced St Cuthbert's RC.  St Cuthbert’s came out on top after extra time to take the U15 title 3-1.

The Under 16 final was contested between Oulder Hill Community and St Cuthbert’s RC. St. Cuthbert’s with a 3-1 win.

Mike Rudkowskyj, Secretary of Rochdale Metro Schools FA, was impressed with both the football and facilities on display, he said: “There were some really good games of football; all the schools played in the right spirit. The students all seemed to enjoy themselves and there were some promising signs for local talent.

“Using Hopwood Hall’s public facilities has been a massive bonus in promoting the Rochdale Schools FA showcase event. The facilities were top class and the support from the college staff was very helpful.

“The students were impressed with the quality of the pitches too and were made welcome by the friendly feel around campus.

"The Rochdale Metro Schools FA will be hoping for a long and lasting relationship with Hopwood Hall College in the years to come.”
