Milnrow and Newhey ward news from Councillor Neil Butterworth

Date published: 02 August 2017

A busy few months with elections, successes for Andy Burnham, who will take a new look at the special framework and a successful General Election in Greater Manchester for the Labour Party.

We will now continue to support all our residents both on a national and local stage.

Election News

A great win for Tony Lloyd. A safe pair of hands and will put Rochdale back on the map for the right reasons.

Ward Projects and Developments

We have a lot of local projects on the go at the moment, some of which are coming to a close and some with work still to be done...

Managing Flood Risk

I am working with the Environment Agency to mitigate the flood risks in the ward.

We have successfully prosecuted an individual for illegal tipping that has polluted Butterworth Hall Brook.

New House Builds

These are a priority within the borough; I am determined we use brown field sites only using our green spaces as a last resort,  e.g. Coral Mill now almost completed, some houses are occupied and the problems with excess surface water on Stewart Street are being fixed.

Buses and Trams

I am pushing hard to get Metrolink parking on Beresford Street, Newhey.

A change to bus timetables and routes on the back of the re-regulation of the bus system. The proposal is for smaller buses working the entire ward and feeding into the major hubs at Milnrow and Newhey bus terminals and tram stations. This will be mirrored throughout Greater Manchester.

Local Business Development

We have a project to supply every shop and business in Milnrow, Newhey and Ogden with a hanging basket in the summer and autumn together with a Christmas tree in December, funding is agreed and we are looking for volunteers to erect the brackets. This will make our commercial areas much more enticing to locals and tourists alike, increasing footfall for our local businesses.

Longer Term Developments

My energy company for Greater Manchester is taking shape and has the support of the new Mayor Andy Burnham.

Financial services have been a disaster area for some time in the UK. I am leading an initiative to form a local bank for Greater Manchester.

Milnrow & Newhey Charity Carnival

This was a great success and both the RKT Trust and Springhill Hospice have benefited from our support.

Day-to-Day Casework

The day-to-day work of a councillor is, as you would expect, very varied. I deal with homeless people, right down to people who just want the grass cutting (not always does the grass belong to the Council).

These individual cases number into the hundreds, and up until my election it was impossible to track the progress and outcomes of individual cases in order to update residents and communicate with the wider community exactly what your councillors do on your behalf. During my first few weeks serving as your councillor I pushed and got a councillor's enquiry system established. The work had been done but the button needed to be pushed to create a unique case number so we can trace and measure results. I am now pushing hard to get all councillors to use this system in order to enable us to publish these outcomes and increase openness and transparency with you, our residents.

Please visit the Council’s web site and feedback your comments; it’s your council, paid for by your money, you need to know if you are getting value for that money.

And finally…

Dog fouling and pigeon droppings have been of ongoing concern, and if you see me I will tell you the problems we have with bees.

With your help we can deliver.
