Milnrow Band Bavarian Night

Date published: 26 September 2017

Ten members of Milnrow band put on a concert of Bavarian type music on Saturday at Milnrow Working Men's Club.

Suitably attired in what is perceived to be traditional costume, the band kept the audience enthralled for over two hours with offerings of such well known items as 'Happy Wanderer' and 'Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines' as well as traditional Bavarian style music.

John Binns fronted the band and kept things flowing with a well-rehearsed compering style and a less than perfect 'pseudo' German accent.

Every so often during the concert, at the sound of a 'bugle call', accompanied by a drum roll, the audience would be encouraged at the call of one, two, three in German to down their ale.

On occasions, the audience were also involved in the art of 'Schunkelning' , the mandatory 'forward', 'back', 'stand up', 'sit down' audience participation exercise.

Those present obviously enjoyed this unusual musical offering from members of the local Championship Section Brass Band.

Band members, entered into the informal atmosphere of the evening, playing with a relaxed and care free attitude and integrated well with the audience, knowing that the constraint and concentration of contesting was for the moment on the back burner.
