Ashworth Road closed from School Lane down to Simpson Clough due to landslide

Date published: 05 October 2017

Ashworth Road, Ashworth Valley, Norden, was washed away last night, Wednesday 4 October, due to a landslide and is currently closed from School Lane down to Simpson Clough.

A local resident says: “The road was washed away last night, just where the new fencing was being strengthened.

“The tarmac is suspended in mid-air, with the embankment washed away underneath.

“Highways have just arrived to assess the situation.”

UPDATE:

Andrew Storey, head of highways at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “Because of recent heavy rainfall, some of the embankment on a section of Ashworth Road has fallen away.

"As a result, we’ve had to close a section of the road to traffic between the Scout Camp to the north and the Gelder Clough Residential Caravan Park to the south.

"We’re currently organising site investigation works, so we can establish what the problem is and what repairs are needed.

"As we are only in the early stages of investigating this issue, we don’t know how long the road will be closed at this point.”
