Local schools affected by the collapse of Carillion

Date published: 16 January 2018

Three Rochdale schools are affected by the collapse of the UK construction and outsourcing group Carillion.

Carillion provided facilities management services at Hollingworth Academy, Wardle Academy and Falinge High.

Asked what effect the collapse would have on the schools, a spokesperson for the Council said: “We have been in discussions with key organisations since late in 2017, following the profits warning issued by Carillion.

"We have been preparing for such a possibility through the development of contingency plans.

"We are working closely with relevant schools to make sure disruption is avoided and we welcome the reassurance offered by the government that public services will be protected.

"We recognise that this is a difficult and unsettling time for organisations working with the company and in particular for the employees of Carillion and offer our thanks for their continued commitment.”

Liz McInnes, Member of Parliament for Heywood and Middleton, called on the government to act quickly to bring public sector contracts back in-house to protect public services and ensure employees, supply chain companies, taxpayers and pension fund members are protected.

She said: "The collapse of Carillion marks a watershed moment in British politics.

"Now is the time to end the rip-off privatisation policies and outsourcing that cost the public billions of pounds and which allow private companies to cream off the profits and then leave chaos in their wake. We need to start putting the needs of the many before the profits of the few.”
