The Waggon Inn - Marston’s Pub of the Year

Date published: 18 January 2018

The Waggon Inn in Milnrow was named Marston’s Pub of the Year at a special presentation in Derby on Thursday 11 January.

Dario Padron and Kate Caffrey, who run the pub, were invited to one of Marston’s hotels  where they were presented with the award by operations director, Andrew Carill.

In November 2017, the Waggon Inn, which was built in 1782, was awarded Turnaround Winner for the north region, before the duo discovered also won the title nationally.

Dario and Kate moved into the Waggon Inn in September 2015 and started serving both traditional dishes and Canary Island tapas around two months later.

Kate said: “We were shocked but happy to be recognised for the hard work and hours we put in. The event was the culmination of months of judging of over 400 entries from the taverns and leased estate.

“The Waggon has a unique selling point in that we offer restaurant quality food in a traditional community pub environment. There can’t be many pubs where builders come in for lunch and order tapas. We like our customers to leave happier than when they came in.”

“We have taken a tired back-street boozer to become a vibrant community pub.”
