Norden’s Great British Spring Clean

Date published: 12 March 2018

The village of Norden was treated to a sparkling spring clean on Saturday (10 March) for The Friends of Norden Jubilee Park’s Great British Spring Clean event.

Areas benefitting from the tidy-up included Jubilee Park, St Paul's Parish Hall/Blackpits, Greenbooth Road, Ashworth Valley, Red Lumb and behind Ashbourne Nursing Home.

Volunteers had litter pickers at the ready, including residents of Norden and surrounding areas, The Friends of Ashworth Valley plus the full help and support of the Rochdale in Bloom team. They were joined by the Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale, Ian and Christine Duckworth, and local councillors who turned up to show support.

Organiser and Chairman of Friends of Norden Jubilee Park & NEEVA, Paul Ellison, said: "It’s great to see so many volunteers, groups and Councillors turn up to lend a hand.  Norden is certainly a lot cleaner and litter free now.

“We collected approximately 40 bags of rubbish and other larger items which will be picked up Monday morning by Rochdale Council.

"I would like to show my appreciation and thank all involved. Special thanks to the Co-op and Joanne at Norden’s Community Cafe for supporting us."

Councillor Michael Holly said: "It's fantastic to be part of such an excellent community event. I've been talking to volunteers, community groups and Norden residents; they have my full support in any way I can assist them."

Volunteers were treated to a bacon sandwich and drink at Norden’s Community Cafe, where Jo Hallett prepared the food and donated hot drinks free of charge. Sharon Leighton from the Norden Co-op donated the bacon, butter, sauce and bread.

Mr Ellison added: “Let's keep Norden litter free: anyone who sees any, pick up and bin it. We also urge everyone to pick up and bin any dog fouling; it is not acceptable to leave it and dog owners who offend, will be caught and fined.”
